Hi there! As a lifelong creative and lover of color, I can’t believe I ever went through a phase of wanting any sort of neutral leaning home. This seems crazy to me now that I am really embracing ALL the color in my home. I've become incredibly passionate about the psychology of color and how it can affect our mood as I have seen the benefits at play in my own life.
In this blog post, I'll guide you through a simple break down of the psychology of color, the impact on our moods, and why filling your home with plenty of color might just be the best thing you ever did. I'll also share some tips on how to choose the right colors for your home and how to use color to create a mood or atmosphere that brings you loads of joy, peace, energy, or whatever it is you're after!
How Color Affects Our Mood
Color has a powerful effect on our mood. Different colors can evoke different emotions, and they can even affect our energy levels and productivity.
Here are some of the most common colors and their associated meanings:
- Red: Passion, love, romance, anger
- Yellow: Happiness, joy, optimism, sunshine
- Blue: Peace, tranquility, calmness, trust
- Purple: Royalty, luxury, mystery, spirituality
- Pink: Love, femininity, sweetness, tenderness
- White: Purity, innocence, cleanliness, peace
- Green: Growth, renewal, hope, freshness
- Orange: Creativity, energy, enthusiasm, excitement
Why Fill Your Home with Color?
There are many reasons why you should fill your home with color, besides the fact that color undoubtedly creates beauty. Color can:
- Improve your mood: Surrounding yourself with colors that you love can help to improve your mood and make you feel more positive and optimistic.
- Boost your energy levels: If you're feeling tired or sluggish, adding some stimulating colors to your home can help to give you a boost of energy.
- Create a calming atmosphere: If you're feeling stressed or anxious, adding some calming colors to your home can help you to relax and de-stress.
- Enhance your creativity: Color can be a great stimulus for creativity. If you're looking to boost your creativity, surround yourself with colors that inspire you.
- Make your home more appealing: Color can make your home more cozy and inviting to guests.
Tips for Choosing the Right Colors for Your Home
When choosing colors for your home, it's important to consider your personal preferences and the mood you want to create. Here are a few tips:
- Start with your favorite colors: Choose colors that you love and that make you feel happy and positive.
- Consider the mood you want to create: Do you want your home (or room) to be a place of peace and tranquility, or do you want it to be a place of energy and excitement?
- Think about the size of your space: If you have a smaller, cozy space, you might want to choose light and airy colors that will make the space feel larger. If you have a large space, you can play with the use of bolder colors if that sounds fun.
- Consider the furniture and décor in your home: The colors you choose should complement. Color alone can make such a huge impact so it is one of my favorite ways to create a shift!
- Bonus Tip: My favorite place to browse paint colors is Houzz! You can put in your brand of paint and color, or just describe the color you'd like to find and you can browse real life pictures of spaces painted those colors. It's incredible! Keep in mind every space is going to have different natural lighting angles and levels but its a great place to browse for sure!
How to Use Color to Create a Mood or Atmosphere
Color can be a great way to add personality to your home. If you have a favorite color, use it throughout your home to create a cohesive look. A little pop can go a long way in each space of your home to tie it all together. You can also use different colors in different rooms to create different moods.
For example, if you want a home office to feel energetic and productive, you might use energetic colors like bright reds, oranges, or yellows. If you want a bedroom to feel calming and relaxing, you might use calming colors like light blues, greens, or lavenders.
Color can instantly transform and create a sense of space. The use of color can be useful if you want to create a particular feeling in a room. For example, if you want a bedroom to feel cozy and intimate, you might use darker colors. If you want a living room to feel airy and open, you might use lighter colors.
You can also use color to create different focal points in your home. For example, you could use a bold color on the walls to draw attention to a particular piece of furniture or artwork. Think of your use of color as a directional sign in your space, guiding the viewers eyes to whatever you want them to see.

PS - Top image on this post has a peek at the Benjamin Moore - Quiet Moments paint color we used quite a bit of in our main spaces. Our accent walls are Mount Saint Anne, which is two shades darker and not shown here. We personally love the light blues and greens for base colors as these feel fresh and create a calm, relaxing atmosphere which is exactly what we want in our comfort spaces!
