Why birth time matters in synastry
A few minutes can change more than you might think.
Your birth time determines your Ascendant and the houses of your chart. In a relationship reading, that means it affects where another person’s planets land in your chart, which areas of life they tend to touch, and some of the patterns that may rise to the top of the reading.
Birth time also matters for the angles of the chart: the Ascendant, Descendant, Midheaven and IC. These points can make very close contacts with another person’s planets, and they’re part of what Two Charts, One Story™ looks at when it finds the patterns connecting your charts.
What can change if the birth time is wrong?
The planets themselves usually won’t move very far over the course of a day, although the Moon can move enough to matter in some cases. The biggest changes are usually:
- your Ascendant and other chart angles
- the houses your planets occupy
- where the other person’s planets fall in your houses
- contacts involving the Ascendant, Descendant, Midheaven or IC
- some of the relationship patterns the reading identifies as most important
Because Two Charts, One Story™ looks beyond isolated aspects and considers houses, angles and repeating connections across both charts, accurate times give the engine more information to work with.
What if I don’t know the exact time?
Use the most accurate birth time you have.
If you have a time from a birth certificate or another reliable record, use that. If you only know an approximate time, you can still explore the charts, but keep in mind that house placements and angle contacts may shift.
If the time is completely unknown, I wouldn’t recommend inventing one just to complete the chart. A made-up time can create houses and angles that look precise even though they may not belong to the person at all.
Why is the birth location needed?
Birth location allows the chart to calculate the sky relative to the place where each person was born. Along with the birth time, it is necessary for calculating the Ascendant, houses and chart angles accurately.
Do a few minutes really matter?
Sometimes yes, sometimes barely at all.
The Ascendant moves continually throughout the day, so a small difference in birth time can shift its exact degree. If another person has a planet very close to one of your angles, even a relatively small time difference can change the orb of that contact.
That doesn’t mean every five-minute difference creates a completely different relationship story. It means that when the reading gets specific about houses and angles, the quality of the birth data matters.
