A profection year calculator tells you which house your year is ruled by, based on nothing more than your age and your rising sign. Every birthday the focus advances one house, so at one you are in your second house year, at two your third, and by twelve you are back at the first and starting the cycle again.

How to Use the Profection Year Calculator

You do not need a birth time for the age count itself, though you will need one to know your rising sign, and the rising sign is what anchors the whole sequence. Without it you can still see which house number your year lands on, and the sign sitting on that house will be a guess.

The house your year lands in describes where the attention often goes. A tenth house year can bring public matters forward, a fourth house year may turn the focus toward home and family, and a seventh house year often puts other people at the center of things.
The ruler is the part most people miss, and it is where the technique gets interesting. Whichever planet rules the sign on that house becomes the ruler of your year, so wherever that planet sits natally, and whatever is transiting it, matters far more than usual for those twelve months. A year ruled by a planet in your twelfth house can feel very different from one ruled by a planet sitting on your midheaven.
This is also why two people the same age can have completely different years. The house number is shared, the sign on it is not, and the ruler sends the story somewhere specific to your chart.

How Profection Years Are Calculated
The arithmetic is simple enough to do in your head once you know the rule. Your rising sign is house one and covers the year from birth to your first birthday. Each birthday after that moves you forward one house, in order, and the cycle repeats every twelve years.
So at age twelve, twenty four, thirty six and forty eight you return to a first house year, which is why those birthdays often land differently from the ones around them. Count your age in completed years, then move that many houses forward from your first house. Age zero is the first house, age one is the second, age two is the third, and so on. What is a profection year chart?
It is your natal chart read with one house emphasized for the year. Nothing in the chart moves. The profection simply points at which house and which ruling planet carry the next twelve months, so you read your existing chart with that emphasis in place.
Do I need my birth time for a profection year calculator?
For the house number, no, since that comes from your age alone. For the sign on that house and the planet ruling your year, yes, because both depend on your rising sign, and the rising sign needs an accurate birth time.
When does my profection year change?
On your birthday. The year runs birthday to birthday, so a profection year rarely lines up with the calendar year, and the change happens whether or not anything feels different that week.
What is the ruler of my profection year?
It is the planet that rules the sign sitting on your profected house. That planet becomes the one to watch for the year, both where it sits in your natal chart and what is transiting it.
Is a profection year the same as a solar return?
They are separate techniques that both start on your birthday. A profection points at a house and its ruler for the year. A solar return is a whole chart cast for the moment the Sun returns to its natal position. Many astrologers read them together.
