Mars in Virgo 2026-2027: What It Means for Your Rising Sign

Mars in Virgo is the planet of action, and sometimes anger, moving through the sign of craft, correction and useful work. In this cycle Mars enters Virgo on November 25, 2026 and leaves for Libra on July 15, 2027, and in between it turns retrograde on January 10 and returns to Leo for 12 weeks, from February 21 to May 14.

So this is a long one. Mars usually spends about 2 months in a sign, and this time it spends most of 8 months working the same stretch of sky, which means the thing you start fixing in December is very likely the thing you are still fixing in June. After a fall of Mars in Leo, where the energy wanted an audience, Virgo can feel like a relief, because the job finally gets smaller and more real. You stop announcing the project and start sorting the drawer it lives in. Then January arrives, Mars stops, and the drawer you thought was finished gets pulled back out.

That loop covers 2 neighboring houses of your chart, which is why the rising sign sections below each name a pair. If you are newer to astrology, the astrology hub gathers the tools and guides on this site, and the guide to Mars in astrology covers the planet itself.

What Does Mars in Virgo Mean?

Mars in Virgo means drive that goes into getting something right. Mars is the planet of action, appetite and the fight you’re willing to have, and Virgo is a mutable earth sign ruled by Mercury, associated with skill, health, routines, service and the small corrections that make a thing work. Put them together and you get energy that wants to repair the engine before it races the car.

Mars holds no rulership, exaltation, detriment or fall in Virgo, so it works here as a guest in a sign with strong opinions. Virgo hands Mars a checklist. Mars likes a clear target, and a problem with edges is something it can go after. Anger comes out differently here. Under Mars in Virgo irritation shows up as precision, the email rewritten 4 times, the comment about how the dishwasher is loaded, the sudden need to reorganize the pantry at 11pm because something in your life is out of order and the pantry is the part you can reach.

People born with Mars in Virgo carry that style all the time. They go after what they want through competence, by becoming the person who knows how it works. The transit lends a version of that to everyone for these months, whatever Mars sign you were born with, and for all of us the work becomes sorting what deserves your best effort from what you keep polishing so you never have to finish it.

That last part is Virgo’s shadow. Refinement can become a place to hide. Mars wants a result, and Virgo can keep moving the finish line by one more fix, which is exactly the tension the retrograde is going to press on.

Mars Retrograde 2027: Why Mars Goes Back Into Leo

Mars retrograde in 2027 runs from January 10 to April 1, and for the back half of it Mars is in Leo again, the sign it left on November 25. That return is the most specific thing about this cycle. Plenty of Mars retrogrades stay in one sign. This one walks back across a border.

What Mars finds when it gets back to Leo is a retrograde Jupiter. Jupiter turns retrograde in Leo on December 12 at 27°01′ and doesn’t turn direct until April 12 at 17°00′, so for most of March both planets are moving backward through the same sign. Mars gets within about 3½ degrees of Jupiter on March 28 and never closes the gap. Then on April 1 Mars stops at 20°56′ Leo, within 3 degrees of the South Node.

If you read the Mars in Leo 2026 guide, you know the South Node in Leo is the familiar version of being seen, the performance that reliably works. In November, Mars and Jupiter both landed on that degree with a lot of fuel. The retrograde brings Mars back to stand next to it again, slowly, with Jupiter also reviewing nearby. So the question in March can be fairly pointed. Was what you went big on in November something you want to keep building, or something you could do in your sleep? Plenty of people will notice it as plain fatigue with one project and a sudden appetite for another.

The retrograde has 2 more dates to circle. On February 19 Mars opposes the Sun, which is the midpoint of every Mars retrograde and the night Mars sits opposite the Sun in the sky, rising at sunset and up all night. If you want to see this transit with your own eyes, that week is when to look. And Mars squares Uranus in Gemini 3 times, once on each pass, on December 4, February 17 and May 28. Squares in my reading are where the friction makes something move, and Uranus brings the sudden part, the plan that changes because a better one interrupted it. Those 3 dates are the hinges of the whole stretch.

Mars in Virgo by Rising Sign, 2026-2027

Houses here are whole sign, counted from your rising sign. Each section names 2 houses, the Virgo house Mars works for most of the transit and the Leo house it returns to between February 21 and May 14.

Mars in Virgo for Aries Rising: 6th House, Then the 5th

Mars is your chart ruler, so wherever it goes you go with it, and for most of these 8 months it works your 6th house of work, health and daily routine. This is a strong stretch for rebuilding how your days run, the training plan, the workflow, the systems you have meant to fix since spring. When the retrograde returns Mars to your 5th house of creativity, romance and play, a project you set aside to be responsible comes back asking for time. By late May you might be fitting it into the routine you built, and the 2 can live together.

Mars in Virgo for Taurus Rising: 5th House, Then the 4th

Your 5th house of creative work, pleasure, romance and children gets Mars first, and Virgo makes it a craft. Practicing something for the joy of getting good at it belongs here, and so does noticing that a relationship gets better when you pay attention to its details. During the retrograde Mars slides into your 4th house of home and family, where the house itself wants your hands, a repair, a move, the family conversation you keep postponing. What you return to in late May carries more weight because of what got settled at home.

Mars in Virgo for Gemini Rising: 4th House, Then the 3rd

Mercury rules both your rising sign and Virgo, so Mars spends this transit in a house your own chart ruler owns, your 4th house of home, family and private life. The energy goes straight into the house, sorting, renovating, finally clearing a room. In late February Mars reverses into your 3rd house of siblings, neighbors, writing and everyday conversation, and an exchange you thought was finished reopens. Uranus sits in your 1st house and squares Mars 3 times, so the plan for your home may change because you did.

Mars in Virgo for Cancer Rising: 3rd House, Then the 2nd

Mars in your 3rd house speeds up your words, your errands and your learning. This is the season to write, edit, study something technical or say the precise thing you have softened for years. The retrograde pulls Mars back into your 2nd house of money, possessions and self-worth, and with it comes a second look at what you charge, what you spend and what your time is worth to you. What you learned in December pays off in that review, and by June you might say it with much more confidence.

Mars in Virgo for Leo Rising: 2nd House, Then the 1st

Mars works through your 2nd house of income, resources and worth, which makes this a season for tightening up the money, the pricing, the invoices, the budget you have avoided. Then from February 21 to May 14 Mars is back in your own sign, crossing your 1st house. The energy turns toward your body and how you present yourself, and the work you did on worth in winter can change how you walk into a room by spring.

Mars in Virgo for Virgo Rising: 1st House, Then the 12th

Mars in your 1st house puts drive directly into you, your body, your health, your appearance and the way you start things. No rising sign feels Mars in Virgo more personally, and it often arrives as a burst of energy you haven’t had in a while. The retrograde sends Mars into your 12th house of rest, solitude and what goes on out of view, which is exactly what the body asks for after an intense December. Mercury, your chart ruler, helps decide how the whole thing goes, so watch where Mercury is each time Mars changes direction.

Mars in Virgo for Libra Rising: 12th House, Then the 11th

Mars moves through your 12th house, so most of the effort happens where nobody sees it, the private project, the inner work, the thing you are preparing before anyone knows. Anger can surface sideways in this house, and a real outlet for the energy helps. In spring Mars retraces your 11th house of friends, groups and future plans, and a community or collaboration needs sorting out before you go further. When Mars returns to Virgo in May, the private work is ready for the people you sorted through.

Mars in Virgo for Scorpio Rising: 11th House, Then the 10th

Mars is your traditional chart ruler, alongside Pluto, so this transit is personal for you. Pluto works on the foundations in your 4th house in Aquarius, while Mars spends these months in your 11th house of networks, audiences and long-range goals, sharpening who you work with and what you are aiming for. The retrograde takes Mars into your 10th house of career and public role, and a work situation comes back for a second round. The people you organized in winter might be the ones who help you handle it.

Mars in Virgo for Sagittarius Rising: 10th House, Then the 9th

Mars in your 10th house puts your energy into your career and reputation, and Virgo makes this the season you get very good at the job in front of you. During the retrograde a course, a trip or a big idea about where your work is going comes back for review, because Mars has returned to your 9th house of travel, study, publishing and belief. Uranus sits opposite your rising sign and squares Mars 3 times, so a partner or client could change the plan on each of those dates.

Mars in Virgo for Capricorn Rising: 9th House, Then the 8th

Mars moves through your 9th house of learning, travel and the beliefs that steer you, and Virgo turns that into study with a practical use, the certification, the research, the trip with a purpose. In late February Mars reverses into your 8th house of shared money, debt, intimacy and trust, and a joint finance or a close relationship needs a harder look. What you learn in winter could give you better terms in spring.

Mars in Virgo for Aquarius Rising: 8th House, Then the 7th

Mars in your 8th house points your energy at what you share with other people, money, taxes, debts, intimacy, and Virgo wants the paperwork in order. Once the retrograde carries Mars into your 7th house of partnership, a partner, client or rival becomes the focus, sometimes with friction. That friction is productive. The other person sees what you missed.

Mars in Virgo for Pisces Rising: 7th House, Then the 6th

Mars spends this transit opposite your rising sign, in your 7th house of partners and close agreements, so other people supply much of the push, the client with notes, the partner with a plan, the rival who makes you better. The retrograde takes Mars into your 6th house of work and health, and your routines and your body start asking for the same precision you were giving to everyone else. By June you might have both the terms of a partnership and the daily structure to carry it.

A caveat that applies to all 12 rising signs. A rising sign tells you which houses Mars is crossing. It can’t tell you what Mars meets there. If you were born with a planet anywhere from 21° Leo to 10° Virgo, Mars crosses it 3 times, and that part of your chart is where this transit does its real work. The same goes for planets in the other mutable signs, where Mars squares or opposes them. Slower transits keep running underneath all of this too, Pluto in Aquarius and Uranus in Gemini among them, and the 2027 horoscope by rising sign puts this Mars cycle inside the whole year.

So the most useful thing you can do is check your own degrees. Your Beautiful Birth Chart lays out your planets by sign and house, shows every aspect, and lets you move to any date, so you can see exactly which of your placements Mars touches on November 25, January 10 and April 1, and which house it is working in on the day you are reading this.

What Mars in Virgo Asks You to Finish

Mars in Virgo runs on a simple test. Is this work getting better, or am I just still working on it? The first is craft. The second is a very comfortable way to never show anyone anything, and Virgo can make it look like diligence. The retrograde is the transit’s built-in answer, because it forces a pause long enough to see the difference. Some of what you were refining in December will turn out to be finished already. Some of it will turn out to be the wrong thing to refine, which you’ll know by April because you’ll have been back to Leo and remembered why you started.

I think that is the gift in a long Mars. It gives you time to see your own standard clearly, what you will hold work to and what you’ll let go, and that standard says a great deal about what kind of work is yours. If you want to read further on how Mars has moved through earth signs on this site, the Mars in Capricorn guide covers the sign where Mars is exalted, which makes a useful comparison with a sign where it has no dignity at all.

Mars in Virgo asks you to finish the thing at the standard you set for it, and then to let it be finished. There is a version of you who knows which of her projects belong to the larger thing she is building, and who has stopped spending months polishing the ones that don’t. She can tell the difference between her work and her busywork at a glance. Your Contribution Pattern gives you the language and evidence to see that through-line in your own chart now, while Mars is still showing you what you’re willing to work hard on.
