Unique Christmas Ornaments: Hand Painted Stars With Pom Poms
Unique Christmas ornaments are the little treasures you know you won’t see on everyone else’s tree. These hand painted stars, with a pom pom on every point, definitely qualify.
I paint the paper myself, wrap it around each paper mache star and finish all five points with pom poms. Then I paint the back gold and sign and date it. They’re colorful, a little whimsical and full of the loose florals I love to paint. There are just 10 in this collection, each with its own pom pom color.

Painting the paper first lets me play with my usual loose florals in a whole new shape. Then came the pom poms. Pom poms were a random urge and just made them feel more whimsy. I try to listen to that little voice when she has ideas.
Paper mache is light, so the stars sit happily on any branch, and they won’t break like ceramic if a little hand or a curious cat knocks one down. And the painted gold back, with my signature and the year, means even the side you don’t usually see feels finished.
Ways to Use Them
They’re adorable on a tree, but they love other spots too. Tie one onto a wrapped gift so the topper becomes part of the present, hang a few from a garland or tuck them in a window. I especially love the idea of giving a child one each Christmas, so they grow up with their own little constellation, each one dated.
