Black Moon Lilith is the point in your chart where the Moon sits furthest from Earth. It is not a body, so nothing is there to look at. Pull your free birth chart and find the ⚸ glyph, then write down the sign and the house.
Before you read a single interpretation, check which Lilith you were given. It matters more here than anywhere else in the chart, and the numbers below are the reason.
Why Two Calculators Give You Different Signs
There are two versions of Black Moon Lilith in circulation. Mean Lilith is a smoothed average of where the apogee would be. True Lilith, sometimes called osculating, is where the apogee sits at that exact instant.
The Moon’s orbit gets pulled around by the Sun enough that those two separate considerably. Measuring them against each other across 1,329 dates between 1970 and 2010:
- They sit 10.9 degrees apart on average
- At their furthest they are 29.8 degrees apart, which is almost a whole sign
- They land in completely different signs 36% of the time
So for more than one person in three, the answer to “what is my Lilith sign” depends entirely on which calculator you happened to open. That is the difference between Lilith in Cancer and Lilith in Leo, and two readings that share nothing.
If you have ever read a Lilith description and thought it belonged to somebody else, this is the first thing to check.
Which one should you use
Most software gives you mean Lilith by default, and most of what is written about Lilith online was written from mean positions. Astro.com offers both, listing true Lilith separately.
My honest suggestion is to look up both, read both, and see which one describes something you recognize. That sounds unscientific and it is the most useful thing you can do here, because you have access to the one piece of evidence no astrologer has, which is your own life.
The Other Two Liliths
Three separate things carry the name, which adds to the confusion:
- Black Moon Lilith, the lunar apogee, mean or true. This is the one almost everybody means
- Asteroid Lilith, number 1181, a real rock in the asteroid belt. A completely different point with a completely different position
- Dark Moon Lilith, sometimes called Waldemath, a hypothetical second moon that was never confirmed to exist
If a calculator gives you a Lilith position without saying which, it is almost certainly mean Black Moon Lilith.
What It Describes
Lilith marks the part of you that got a bad reaction early and went underground. The thing you were too much about. The want that made a room go quiet.
It usually shows up two ways, and most people do both at different ages. Either you suppress it and it comes out sideways as resentment, or you lead with it hard and dare anyone to object. Neither is the finished version. The finished version is being able to want the thing without a performance in either direction.
The house is where it happens. The sign is how it sounds when it does. Black Moon Lilith in astrology goes through it properly, sign by sign.

Your Lilith Return
The apogee goes right round the zodiac in 8.84 years, which is fast, so unlike Saturn you get a lot of these. Computed from the mean position, your Lilith returns land at roughly:
- 8.9, then 17.7, then 26.5
- 35.4, then 44.2, then 53.1
Look at that first one. Around nine is often when a child works out which parts of herself get a warm response and which do not, and starts editing accordingly. The second at 17.7 is the tender one. Still a teenager, still at home, and she can already see which parts of herself people would rather she toned down. She just has nowhere to go with it yet.
Because they come round every nine years, a Lilith return is a smaller event than a Saturn return and easier to check. Work out your last one and look at what you stopped apologizing for that year.

Do I need my birth time?
For the house, yes. For the sign, usually not, since mean Lilith moves about 40 minutes of arc a day and stays in a sign for roughly nine months.
Is Lilith a planet?
No. Black Moon Lilith is a calculated point, the far end of the Moon’s orbit. There is nothing physically there, which is part of why it reads as something absent.
What is the difference between Lilith and Chiron?
Chiron is where you were hurt and became good at helping others with it. Lilith is where you were told you were too much and went quiet about it. Chiron turns outward as expertise. Lilith turns inward as something withheld.
How often does Lilith change signs?
About every nine months, and the full circuit takes 8.84 years. That makes it far more personal than an outer planet, where everyone your age shares a placement.
Check Which One You Were Given
Find the glyph, write down the sign and house, and check whether your chart says mean or true. If it does not say, assume mean and look up the other one before you decide anything.
