Solstices and Equinoxes in Astrology: The Four Turns of the Year
In astrology, the solstices and equinoxes are the four moments when the Sun moves into a cardinal sign: Aries at the spring equinox, Cancer at the summer solstice, Libra at the autumn equinox, and Capricorn at the winter solstice. They are ingresses like any other. They just happen to be the four that the entire zodiac is built around.
You have felt these whether or not you were tracking them. There is a week in late December where everybody goes quiet and you end up taking stock of a year you have not finished having opinions about. Then some morning in March you want to throw the whole thing out and start over. Those are the corners of the year, and astrology has been reading them for a very long time.
What the Solstices and Equinoxes Are in Astrology
Two of them are the balance points, where day and night come out about even. The other two are the extremes, the longest day and the longest night.
Each of those four moments is also the Sun changing sign, and the four signs it moves into are the cardinal ones. Cardinal signs start things. That is their whole job in the zodiac, and it is why all four of these turns feel like a beginning even when nothing on your calendar changed.
So it is one turning seen through two lenses. Astronomy measures the light. Astrology reads the meaning.
Why the Equinoxes Define the Tropical Zodiac
Zero degrees Aries is the spring equinox itself. It is a moment in the Earth’s year and it stays pinned there, so the stars have no say in where it sits. That is where I start counting, and where nearly all Western astrology starts counting, and the circle gets divided into twelve from that point. The signs come out of the seasons.
So when someone tells you the constellations have shifted and your sign is wrong, they are describing something real about a different system. The stars have drifted against the equinox point over the centuries. The tropical zodiac was never pinned to them in the first place. Spring Equinox: The Sun Enters Aries
The astrological year starts here, which is why so many people feel out of step with January. You make the resolutions in the dark and then nothing in you wants to execute them, and in March, with no ceremony and no list, you suddenly repaint a room or end something you have been tolerating since autumn.
Aries is the first sign and it is ruled by Mars, so this turn does not arrive gently or ask for consensus. It is initiation with the safety off. If you have been waiting to feel ready, this is generally the point where readiness stops being the requirement.
Summer Solstice: The Sun Enters Cancer
The longest day, and then the light starts going back the other way. I think that is why midsummer can carry a little melancholy underneath the barbecue. You reach the top of something on the same day it begins to recede.
Cancer is ruled by the Moon and concerned with home, lineage and who you belong to. So the turn often pulls you inward and domestic right at the height of the social season, which may be why you can be at a party in late June and find that you want to be in your own kitchen instead.
Autumn Equinox: The Sun Enters Libra
Day and night come level again, and then the dark takes the larger share for the next six months. Libra is ruled by Venus and it is the sign of the other person, so this is the turn where other people come back into the frame.
In practice that can look like September arriving and you abruptly having opinions about a relationship you spent all summer not examining. Or you look up and notice how lopsided an arrangement has become, and that it got that way slowly enough that nobody had to decide it.
Winter Solstice: The Sun Enters Capricorn
The longest night, and the light begins coming back the same day. Capricorn is ruled by Saturn and it deals in time, structure and what survives contact with reality.
This is the turn where you take stock, usually without meaning to. You find yourself doing arithmetic on the year in the car, or at three in the morning, counting what you finished against what you said you would finish. Saturn is fair about it and completely unsentimental. It leaves you with one thing to settle, which is what you are willing to keep working on for another year.
Which House the Solstice or Equinox Falls In for You
This is where the four turns stop being weather and start being yours.
Because I read in whole sign houses, the sign is the house. So if you have Aquarius rising, Aries is your third house and every spring equinox lands there, in your writing, your siblings, your short trips, your daily thinking. If you have Cancer rising, that same equinox lands in your tenth, which is your work and your public life, and the spring turn shows up as a career restlessness you get every single year around the same week.
