Where the Name Capricorn Came From
The Babylonians knew this stretch of sky as MUL.SUHUR.MASH, the Goat-Fish, and MUL.APIN, the star compendium that preserves their constellation lists, is where the reading comes from. Appears in MUL.APIN, known from seventh century BCE manuscripts and based on earlier observation.
The Greek and Roman story is the one that stuck. Aegipan, whom Jupiter set among the stars because they had been nursed together. During the war with the Titans he hurled shellfish at the enemy and took on a fish-formed lower body, which is why the figure is half goat and half fish. Hyginus, Astronomica II.28 records it.
Worth holding onto: none of this is where the astrological meaning comes from. The meanings are generally built from element, modality and ruler, which is often why two signs sharing a myth-shape can read nothing alike. The stories tell you what people saw up there. The Capricorn Constellation in the Sky

The Tropic of Capricorn is named for a sky that has since moved. When the line was named, the Sun stood in Capricornus at the December solstice. Precession has carried that solstice point into Sagittarius, so the Sun is no longer in Capricornus when it reaches the Tropic that bears the name.
The constellation and the sign are separate things, and the gap between them is roughly 24 degrees now. Western astrology measures from the spring equinox, so the signs track the seasonal year, while the constellations have drifted west through precession. A tropical astrologer using Capricorn is describing a 30 degree segment of the seasonal circle, not the star pattern of the same name.
Capricorn and the Tenth House
Capricorn has a natural affinity for the tenth house, the part of a chart covering career, public role, reputation, and what you become known for. The pairing is old. William Lilly’s Christian Astrology of 1647 lists what he calls the consignificators of the houses, matching each sign to the house of the same number, and Capricorn consignifies the tenth.
