The Babylonians knew this stretch of sky as MUL.AL.LUL, a word covering both a crab and a snapping turtle, and MUL.APIN, the star compendium that preserves their constellation lists, is where the reading comes from. MUL.APIN lists it as the Crab, the seat of Anu.
The Greek and Roman story is the one that stuck. Hera sent a crab to harass Heracles while he fought the Lernaean Hydra. It snapped at his foot from the swamp, he killed it, and she set it among the stars. Hyginus, Astronomica II.23 records it.
Worth holding onto: none of this is where the astrological meaning comes from. The meanings are generally built from element, modality and ruler, which is often why two signs sharing a myth-shape can read nothing alike. The stories tell you what people saw up there. The structure tells you how the sign may behave.
The Cancer Constellation in the Sky
The brightest star in Cancer is Altarf, at magnitude around fourth magnitude. Arabic at-tarf, the end, taken as the tip of one of the crab’s legs. Sources differ slightly on the gloss.
Cancer is the dimmest constellation of the zodiac, with only two stars above fourth magnitude, and it still holds Praesepe, the Beehive Cluster, one of the nearest open clusters at roughly 590 light years. Ptolemy called it the nebulous mass in the breast of Cancer, and Galileo resolved about forty stars in it in 1609.
The constellation and the sign are separate things, and the gap between them is roughly 24 degrees now. Western astrology measures from the spring equinox, so the signs track the seasonal year, while the constellations have drifted west through precession. A tropical astrologer using Cancer is describing a 30 degree segment of the seasonal circle, not the star pattern of the same name.
Cancer and the Fourth House

William Lilly’s Christian Astrology of 1647 lists what he calls the consignificators of the houses, matching each sign to the house of the same number, and Cancer consignifies the fourth.
