Where the Name Aquarius Came From
The Babylonians knew this stretch of sky as GU.LA, the Great One, and MUL.APIN, the star compendium that preserves their constellation lists, is where the reading comes from. Associated with the god Ea, usually shown holding an overflowing vessel.
The Greek and Roman story is the one that stuck. Most accounts name Ganymede, whom Jupiter made cupbearer to the gods. Others say Deucalion, for the great flood, and others Cecrops, for sacrifices made with water before wine existed. Aratus calls the figure Hydrochoos, the water-pourer, and describes the faint stars beneath him as scattered drops. Hyginus, Astronomica II.29, and Aratus, Phaenomena records it.

The Aquarius Constellation in the Sky
The brightest star in Aquarius is Sadalsuud, at magnitude about 2.9. Arabic al-sa’d al-su’ud, glossed as the luckiest of the lucky, named for its heliacal rising as the season of gentle rain began. It is marginally brighter than Alpha Aquarii, Sadalmelik.
The Helix Nebula lies in Aquarius at about 650 light years, one of the closest planetary nebulae to Earth.
The constellation and the sign are separate things, and the gap between them is roughly 24 degrees now. Western astrology measures from the spring equinox, so the signs track the seasonal year, while the constellations have drifted west through precession.
