Where the Name Leo Came From
The Babylonians knew this stretch of sky as UR.GU.LA, the Lion, and MUL.APIN, the star compendium that preserves their constellation lists, is where the reading comes from. The sources split on whether the literal sense is lion or great lion, so the Lion is the safe reading.
The Greek and Roman story is the one that stuck. The Nemean Lion, killed by Hercules unarmed as the first of his labors, set among the stars because he was reckoned the king of beasts. Hyginus, Astronomica II.24 records it.
Worth holding onto: none of this is where the astrological meaning comes from. The meanings are generally built from element, modality and ruler, which is often why two signs sharing a myth-shape can read nothing alike. The stories tell you what people saw up there. The structure tells you how the sign may behave.
The Leo Constellation in the Sky
The brightest star in Leo is Regulus, at magnitude 1.4. Latin for ‘little king’, a diminutive of rex. Copernicus introduced it in the 1550s to render Ptolemy’s Greek Basiliskos.
The Leonid meteor shower radiates from Leo, debris from comet 55P/Tempel-Tuttle on a 33 year return. The 1833 storm produced an estimated 100,000 meteors an hour.
The constellation and the sign are separate things, and the gap between them is roughly 24 degrees now. Western astrology measures from the spring equinox, so the signs track the seasonal year, while the constellations have drifted west through precession. A tropical astrologer using Leo is describing a 30 degree segment of the seasonal circle, not the star pattern of the same name.
